Maud and Cecil, childhood sweethearts, grow up and drift apart. Maud finds herself engaged, against her will, to a rich nobleman. Cecil, dejected, goes to the city and becomes a famous musician. Maud, not wishing to marry a man she doesn't love and believing Cecil to have been killed in the war, enters a convent. Cecil returns to find that he is not allowed to enter the convent to contact Maud, and desperately tries to devise a plan to let her know he is alive and still loves her.
